Discussions Portlet

The Discussions portlet displays discussions and messages from projects The common workspace for members working together on a project. you selected in the Project Explorer (your selection is listed in the My Projects portlet) or projects that the community manager selected for the community.

To apply actions to a specific message Any posting. A message can be the original posting in a topic, or it can be a reply to the original posting or to another reply. or a discussion A virtual forum that permits you and other project users to participate in online conversations. Discussions are associated with projects., such as replying to a message, select the message or a discussion, then click the desired button in the action bar. If you do not select a message or a discussion, the buttons in the action bar remain grayed out. To unselect a message or discussion, clear the check box to its left. You can also apply actions by right-clicking the message or discussion and choosing a desired action such as Edit, Delete, Reply to Message, or Notify (for discussions).

Viewing Discussions

You can select the discussions and messages to display by using the filters on the right side of the action bar.

Filter
Description

Select whether you want the portlet to display discussions or individual messages.  

Select whether you want the portlet to display only discussions or messages of a particular project or discussions and messages in all projects (that are listed in your My Projects portlet or the Community Projects portlet).    

View | All Items

My Discussions portlet only. Display all messages or discussions in the project.

View | QuickLinks

Display only discussions or messages that were bookmarked to My QuickLinks A My QuickLink is a bookmark that you can create to a Collaboration object. Collaboration places this link in the object's associated My Tasks, My Documents or My Discussions portlet.

To view only the objects that are accessible by My QuickLinks, click View | QuickLinks in the My Tasks, My Documents or My Discussions portlets. or Community QuickLinks A Community QuickLink is a bookmark that a Community Manager can create to a Collaboration object. Collaboration places this link in the object's associated Community Tasks, Community Documents or Community Discussions portlet.

To view only the objects that are accessible by Community QuickLinks, click View | QuickLinks in the Community Tasks, Community Documents or Community Discussions portlets..

Note: Only Community Managers can change the QuickLinks view in the community portlets.  

View | Number of Items

Limit the number of discussions or messages displayed.

View | Action Bar Layout

View the action bar on one or two lines. The portlet splits the buttons into two action bars or converges the buttons into a single action bar.

Note: Only Community Managers can change the action bar layout in community portlets.

View | Customize

Not available to Guest Users in My Portlets. Available only to Community Managers in Community Portlets. Configure display preferences for the columns and action bar buttons in the portlet, using the Customize View Editor.

Discussions Table

You can view the status of the discussion or message.

Tip: You can change the sorting order of a column by clicking the name of the column.

Description

Discussions/ Messages

Name of the discussion or message. Clicking it launches the application view and displays the contents of the discussion.

Discussions view only: The icons of the discussion indicate the discussion format. The icons are: moderated discussion, unmoderated discussion, and closed discussion.

Project

Name of the project to which the discussion or message belongs.

Created By

Messages view only. Name of the user who posted the message.

Messages

Discussions view only. Number of messages posted in the discussion.

Date Modified
  • Messages view. The date the message was posted.
  • Discussions view. The date of the last posted message.

Action Bar  

If you have a limited permission level, you cannot see all the buttons in the action bar. In addition, only buttons that apply to the object you have selected are enabled; until you have selected a discussion or message, many buttons are grayed out and disabled.

Discussion view only. Create a new discussion. For step-by-step instructions on how to create a discussion, see Creating Discussions

Message view only. Post a new message to a discussion.

Reply

Message view only. Reply to a message.

  • Messages view. Edit the message.
  • Discussions view. Edit the properties and security settings of the discussion.

Delete the discussion or message.

My Discussions portlet only. Remove the message or discussion from your QuickLinks.

Refresh the portlet.

Launch the Project Explorer.

 

My Projects only. Launch your personal project, which is a private project for your own use. If you do not see this button, your system administrator has not enabled the personal projects feature.

Message view only. Preview the first 220 characters of the message.
