The Discussions portlet displays discussions and messages from projects The common workspace for members working together on a project. you selected in the Project Explorer (your selection is listed in the My Projects portlet) or projects that the community manager selected for the community.
To apply actions to a specific message Any posting. A message can be the original posting in a topic, or it can be a reply to the original posting or to another reply. or a discussion A virtual forum that permits you and other project users to participate in online conversations. Discussions are associated with projects., such as replying to a message, select the message or a discussion, then click the desired button in the action bar. If you do not select a message or a discussion, the buttons in the action bar remain grayed out. To unselect a message or discussion, clear the check box to its left. You can also apply actions by right-clicking the message or discussion and choosing a desired action such as Edit, Delete, Reply to Message, or Notify (for discussions).

You can select the discussions and messages to display by using the filters on the right side of the action bar.

If you have a limited permission level, you cannot see all the buttons in the action bar. In addition, only buttons that apply to the object you have selected are enabled; until you have selected a discussion or message, many buttons are grayed out and disabled.
